The instant the words left Man-man’s mouth, they snaked up the dangling branches of a casuarina, along its tendril-like leaves. They returned as an echo: Thing. Thing. You and me. You and me. Bet ya, Pan! Bet ya!

A gale of laughter pursued the echo. They heard her before she emerged from behind a large, silk cotton tree.

It was her. Barefoot, she was clothed in a flowing, indigo robe almost as dark as her skin. The helmet of coins Man-man and Pan had seen her wearing at carnival had disappeared, revealing a tangle of ebony-black curls. On her head was a crown of orange hibiscus flowers, and row upon row of pearl-like seeds dangled around her neck.
